Kingfisher buoyed by strong Screwfix sales
DIY specialist Kingfisher reported a positive set of results for 2016/17, driven by impressive l-f-l sales from Screwfix (13.8%), which opened 60 new outlets and saw strong growth from its specialist trade desks and online. Kingfisher announced it will prioritise investment in the Screwfix brand as part of its five-year transformation plan, with a target of 700 outlets.

Cautious optimism from Ocado
Supply chain investment continues to pay dividends for Ocado, as retail sales reach £352.4m in Q1 2016/17. Ocado’s relentless drive for efficiency throughout the fulfilment process has enabled it to combat continued falling basket sizes (down 1.6% to £110.84), as UK consumers undertake smaller, more regular shopping missions. Physical sales down 1.0% at John Lewis
The total UK non-food offline (stores and mail order) market declined 0.3% in 2016. While DIY & gardening and essential health & beauty items propped this up from falling further – both sectors John Lewis is less exposed to – a 1.0% decline in physical store sales signals a widespread issue for UK retailers, particularly since John Lewis opened two new shops during the year.

Smeg joins BHETA
The iconic Italian appliance manufacturer, Smeg UK has joined BHETA. Smeg UK, established in 1989, has been supplying premium domestic appliances across the UK for more than 20 years. Based in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, the company supplies a range of over 750 products across all via major retailers and distributors throughout England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland & the Republic of Ireland.

Exclusively briefing attracts over 50 exhibitors
Over 50 BHETA members attended a BHETA half day briefing for members planning to exhibit at this year’s Exclusively Housewares and Exclusively Electrical Shows. The briefing forum was aimed at those wishing to find out more about upcoming trends in the housewares and small electricals retail market, and how they can be used to influence product displays at the Exclusively Shows.

Travis Perkins buoyed by strong consumer sales
Building supplier specialist Travis Perkins reported a strong set of results for its consumer division for 2015/2016, with positive l-f-l sales on 2015. However, the retailer reported a 1% fall in group profits owing to a decline in its plumbing & heating division.
