Kingfisher – Retail Update
Kingfisher UK & Ireland reported a weak set of results for Q2 2017/18, with sales down 2.0% to £1,332m. However, the DIY specialist came up against strong comparatives last year (+5.1%), driven by its Screwfix business continuing to extend its specialist ranges and opening new outlets.

DFS disappoints against other big ticket retailers
While DFS has recorded a fifth consecutive year of group revenue growth, its difficult second half nearly counterbalanced its robust first half performance, as weak consumer confidence discouraged customers from making big ticket purchases. Also, as CPI inflation growth has outpaced increases in earnings since February 2017, many shoppers were unwilling to make big ticket purchases such as upholstery.

B&M has continued this week’s trend of acquiring convenience stores with its acquisition of Heron
The move was unexpected, but mostly because Heron isn’t a common household name. However, with 251 convenience stores in the North of England and £274.4m of sales, it offers the opportunity for B&M to roll out a convenience offering on a relatively large scale very quickly.
